Delta Search & Rescue is an independent organisation operating under the auspices of an incorporated company not for gain (Section 21).

While primarily offering LOGISTIC SUPPORT for SEARCH & RESCUE operations, we are a multi skilled organisation with members trained to provide Off-Road Transport, River Crossing.jpg (82471 bytes)Communications and Field Operative skills for any Emergency or Disaster situation.

We provide a professional service to facilitate the smooth and efficient running of an operation for the Ultimate Benefit of the Casualty.

Our Mission

To provide a Professional and Efficient Volunteer Search and Rescue Service, on call 24 hours a day to assist Law Enforcement Agencies, Emergency Response and other Official and Voluntary Agencies during any Emergency or Disaster Situation.

Unit Profile

Our prime skills are in the provision of Transport and Communications.

Logistics / Transport

We are able to transport relief and emergency supplies; evacuate casualties to ambulance or helicopterAlouette Lowering Stretcher.jpg (146025 bytes) loading points; and assist with any number of logistical tasks. These tasks are carried out in a controlled and co-ordinated manner under the direction of a senior member who in turn takes instructions from the responsible agency.

Communications

With our communication skills and equipment, we are able to assist in providing an enhanced message handling facility, thereby allowing more informed and accurate decisions to be made by the Incident Commander or planning team. This enables tighter control to be maintained over resources in the field.

We are also able to assist with the relaying of radio communications in geographically difficult areas and between different organisations on land, sea and air.

Field Operatives

We have a group of Field MAP.gif (20575 bytes)Operatives  who are trained in mountain skills, field communications and rope rescue. This team,  although small at present, has been fairly active. Their activities have generated a fair degree of interest and the group is growing. Ultimately, these members will be qualified in Rope Rescue Level 2, First Aid Level 3 or BAA, and Emergency Field Communications.

Western Cape Wilderness Search & Rescue

We are proud to be a signatory to "Western Cape Wilderness Search & Rescue" (WSAR), an affiliation under the control of EMS, Western Cape. The primary aim of WSAR is to bring together all the diverse skills of member organisations to greatly enhance the effectiveness of Search & Rescue in the Western Cape.

We also assist any organisation that might require our skills, whether volunteer or professional. We have worked with the Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre, Cape Nature Conservation, Disaster Management, Mountain Club of South Africa, Metropolitan Rescue Organisation (METRO), National Sea Rescue Institute, Metropolitan and District Councils, South African Air Force, South African Police Service, and various Local Authorities.

We do not charge for our services! *
Costs are born by many sponsors and donors, as well as the members themselves.

Ultimately, we are there to assist the Casualty.

Membership

Anyone who has an interest in our activities is welcome to apply for membership to Delta Search & Rescue. (See our Membership Application Form)

Membership is divided into four grades: Member, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. Promotion to a higher grade requires the attainment of specific objectives including the passing of written tests.

TrainingExercise at Lourensford.jpg (43926 bytes)

Members receive training in off-road driving techniques, logistics, radio communications, rope rescue, map and compass, in addition to allied subjects such as call out and operating procedures, incident management, helidrill and search base operations. This enables the members in the unit to work effectively as a team as well as integrate with other organisations.

For details on our training program, please see our Training pages.

What area does the unit cover?

We are able to respond to incidents in the Western Cape at fairly short notice. Response outside of this area will require a few hours lead time.

Contact Information

The quickest way to contact the Unit is via our 24 hour number at the Omnipage Control Room in Somerset West (Call Sign: ZERO 2), from where the operator can initiate a page, radio or telephone call-out. We are normally called out by Metro Control via radio or telephone.

Availability and Response

Members are available 24 hours a day, but as we are all volunteers and independently employed, our response timeRes-Team.gif (9079 bytes) during working hours could be slightly delayed.

Actual response is based on the type of operation and the distance from base. When we receive a call for assistance, an assessment is made to determine the type and configuration of personnel, vehicles and equipment required.
