Vehicle Signage

This SOP covers the requirements and rulings pertaining to the signage of all vehicles involved in DSAR operations.

It is not mandatory to have your vehicle marked with any signage unless the owner of the vehicle is in agreement. For those members not wishing to place permanent signage on their vehicles, it must be noted that vehicles partaking in DSAR operations will have to display removable DSAR logos on their front passenger doors. These logos can be on a magnetic base or taped to the windows for easy removal after the operation. Plastic laminated logos can be loaned from the DSAR management team.

It is strongly recommended that all DSAR vehicle operatives adopt one of the following options with regards to vehicle signage.

  1. Vehicles that join DSAR and that already have some form of Emergency service markings.

Vehicles that join DSAR and that already have some form of Emergency service markings will be considered with exception by the DSAR management. The appointed DSAR vehicle-marking manager, Fabrice Stock, will consider dispensation. Written application by the vehicle owner and inspection of the vehicle will be considered at the time of the vehicle owner’s application for DSAR membership.

A written dispensation from the DSAR management team is valid solely for the vehicle in question.

All future changes to the vehicle's emergency signage must comply with this SOP or receive prior written dispensation from the DSAR management team.

Regardless of this SOP, no signage outside the ordinance of the Provincial and or local traffic department will be tolerated.

  1.  The recommended emergency vehicle signage for DSAR is as follows:

    1. Vehicles marked with company logos must have their Company logo preceded by the wording “Sponsored by…”. Alternatively consent from the company owner must be submitted to the appointed DSAR vehicle-marking manager to confirm their knowledge that the vehicle will be used in SAR operations.

    2. Company logos should be exclusive to one surface of the vehicle. It is not acceptable to have both the Company and DSAR logos on the same surface area.

    3. Minimum Signage:

      1. The material to be used must be of either white or red reflective type.

      2. the wording of “SEARCH & RESCUE” must be in Eurostyle Bold.

      3. “SAR” lettering is to be in Switzerland (Helvetica) heavy Bold.

      4. Placing and distribution of the lettering is to comply with the following anagrams.

  1. Full House Markings:

Additional to the above but with the following

  1. Red reflective blocks of receding size to be applied to either side of the vehicle as indicated below:

  2.  “SEARCH & RESCUE” is to appear in red reflective on a yellow background in Eurostyle Bold as shown above. For red vehicles is should be as above except that the lettering is to be in yellow reflective as opposed to red.

  3. Rears of vehicles are to be marked with alternative chevron markings of reflective orange and green Bands. The widths of the bands are to be a minimum of 50mm wide per colour. These markings are to extend the full length of the rear of the vehicle. (as per METRO standards)

  4. Prior to the purchasing of the decals it is strongly recommended that the vehicle owner receive the written approval for the design from the appointed DSAR vehicle-marking manager.

  1. Marking sizes for vehicles (total signage height):

  1.  Sedan vehicles: Recommended signage height should be 50mm

  2. LDV’s and 4 x 4’s : Recommended height should be 170mm

  3. BASIC DSAR LOGO

Logo must be on a Black background.

The DSAR management will not tolerate any variation to the above requirements. Suggestions from the DSAR members will be entertained if submitted in writing to the DSAR management. An answer to the suggestion will be forwarded to the applicant in writing after the management decision.
